No Carbon Wednesday: Garmin Edge 305

I haven't done a No Carbon Wednesday in a while so I thought I'd finally cover the saga of my Garmin Edge 305. My first one fell off of the mount while crossing a trestle. My second one fell off during a cyclocross race. I complained to Garmin about the quality of the mount and amazingly they sent me a replacement for free with an upgraded mount. Unfortunately I smashed the LCD screen in my next 'cross race. I have to give Garmin credit for great support, but I can't recommend the Edge 305 for somebody that crashes as much as I do.

No Carbon Wednesday: Cranks Are Still Falling Off

Remember when I reported there was a global pandemic of cranks falling off. It's still going on. Here's a report from Paul:
Here's a shot of my (insert brand here) bottom bracket that was kind enough to break off. What the photo can't show is that there's a crack extending up the spindle, too, right up inside the bearing race. And yes, that's a shard of BB spindle sticking out of the crankarm!

No Carbon Wednesday: Stump > Steel

Reid sent me these photos of his steel cross bike.
This just doesn't seem right, but I did indeed have to pay to have the downtube replaced.
How bizarre is that?

No Carbon Wednesday: BMX

I've haven't posted a BMX bike yet. Luckily Justin sent me a photo of one.
The company did end up warrantying it because the first batch they made did have a few issues. Sometimes even heattreated chromoly fails especially when doing 360's to flat from eight feet up. Came out unschated luckily.
And yes, you can get carbon fiber BMX frames.

No Carbon Wednesday: Cyclocross Destruction

One common theme in cyclocross racing everywhere is destroying your bike. I'd like to see carbon fiber do this. Thanks to Eric for the photos.

No Carbon Wednesday: Empella Bonfire

In the second race after buying it, I crashed my Empella Bonfire SL and bent the chain stay. I replaced it with an Everti Ti-Fighter which should be almost indestructible. My friend Sarah shot this video which almost catches my crash. I'm in blue and I do an endo at about 7 seconds. Listen to the crunch.

No Carbon Wednesday: Titanium

I just bought myself a new titanium frame and in its honour I thought I'd post some busted titanium. Handlebars was all I could find. Thanks to Erich for the photo.

Busted Seatpost

Jamie sent me these photos of his 18 month old carbon seatpost that snapped.

Since today is supposed to be a No Carbon Wednesday, I'll also include a photo of his broken front derailleur.

No Carbon Wednesday: Carbon > Steel

I was sent this photo of a Jamis Nova that was crashed into a curb. The carbon fork survived, the steel frame didn't. My friend Jen did the same thing with a similar result.

No Carbon Wednesday: Sweat Damage

Kurt sent me these photos of a pair of 1972 Cinelli Giro D'Italia handlebars. Over the years the sweat from his hands has caused corrosion to pit the bars nearly all the way through. Just a reminder to everybody still using aluminum bars, you should replace them every 37 years or so.

No Carbon Wednesday: Cyclocross!

Cyclocross season starts soon. Don't forget to take your camera to the races and then send me photos of the carbon (and non carbon) carnage.

No Carbon Wednesday: Old School

In a time before carbon fiber, when steel, lugs and drillium was king, bicycle failures were common. It's just that nobody was blogging about it.

No Carbon Wednesday: Busted Tube

Usually there isn't anything interesting about a busted inner tube, they get holes and go flat all the time. This one is a little different; I installed it and then wheel starting making strange sounds. After some investigation I found that the tube was full of dirt. No idea how it got in there.

No Carbon Wednesday: Gary Fisher Supercaliber

Two weeks ago I posted Jen's Salsa La Cruces, and now she's done it again. This time it's her Gary Fisher Supercaliber. Two busted frames in two weeks, that's quite an accomplishment.

No Carbon Wednesday: Scandium

These are pictures of Jen's Salsa Las Cruces. She hit a curb riding in the dark and broke her frame in half. You'd think a cyclocross frame should be able to handle hitting a curb. Thankfully, she is ok. Scandium isn't as strong as other aluminum alloys, so maybe it's time I started a new blog, snapped scandium?

No Carbon Wednesday: Litespeed Titanium

Last time was a false alarm, but this time I've really found some busted titanium. Note the carbon fork is fine.

Olympic rowing gold medalist Malcolm Howard is so powerful he just snaps the cranks off of his bike.

No Carbon Wednesday: Back Falls Off

Pedal too hard, bike breaks in half.
