Busted Boat
Thanks to Scott for letting me know it's not just bicycles that are experience carbon fiber failures. This is Carl & Carol's boat after breaking the mast. To put costs into perspective, the mast is worth about 6 or 7 Trek Madones. Ouch, I always knew sailing was expensive.

I'd take the 6-7 bikes...
When I crewed on boats, I had a boat builder explain to me how they worked out what compnents to fit to a racing boat.
You start with the smallest component possible, when that breaks you go to the next size up, when that breaks, you go to the next size up. When you stop breaking components, you go back a step. If you can't break it, it's too heavy.
To think that the next upcoming Boeing 787 jet is going to be carbon fiber...
I had a boat builder describe to me how they determined which components to fit on a racing boat when I was a crew member. You begin with the smallest component that can be found, moving on to the next size up when that breaks. The writing is thorough, interesting, and well-written. I found the study and conclusions to be interesting and thought-provoking. An interesting point of view on the topic is presented in the article. I learned a lot by reading this essay. The facts and supporting evidence for the objections are strong.
