Giant TCR 2 Composite

Jay sent me this photo of his bike.
This happened when a Volkswagon Jetta suddenly appeared in front of me on my 2004 Giant TCR 2 Composite. I was going about 15mph when it pulled out from a driveway into the bike lane. There were bushes blocking the driveway, so I had zero time (five feet) to hit the brakes. I struck the front fender straight on at 90 degrees and CRUNCH the bike snapped in three places, one on the top tube, two on the bottom. I spidered the windshield, rolled off the hood and walked away unharmed.
Amazingly lucky to walk away.

Even More Cyclocross Carnage

Dave alerted me to this photo of Molly Cameron, North America's worst European Cyclocross racer. He got a beautiful Vanilla 'cross frame with a broken carbon handlebar.

No Carbon Wednesday: Empella Bonfire

In the second race after buying it, I crashed my Empella Bonfire SL and bent the chain stay. I replaced it with an Everti Ti-Fighter which should be almost indestructible. My friend Sarah shot this video which almost catches my crash. I'm in blue and I do an endo at about 7 seconds. Listen to the crunch.

Squished Carbon

As seen on, don't clamp carbon without a torque wrench.

Cinelli Aliante - Busted Fork

Rodney sent me a photo of his fork. He's not really sure what happened, one moment he's riding along, the next he's flying through the air. Bikeforums thread and more photos.

Ditch Disaster

Pommi blogs about riding his bike through a small ditch (not sure why) and breaking the frame. Trek replaced the frame with a 2009 saying they'd never seen a failure like this one.

Pedal Falls Off

Haven't had a just riding along story in a while. Here's one from Zack - "Just riding down the road when the pedal fell off. Wasn't even pedaling hard or putting out much torque." Luckily it didn't happen when standing...

Jeff send me these photos of his Forte seatpost that snapped due to a "low-speed climbing snafu." I liked Willie's response - "now it's a road post."

Klein Q-Elite 07

Nick sent in these photos of his Klein Q-Elite 07 with the description "Totally Busted." That I agree with. I wish I had a few more details on how this frame got "Totally Busted."

Fizik Alliante

Kevin sent me this blurry photo of the broken carbon rails on his Fizik Alliante saddle.

No Carbon Wednesday: Titanium

I just bought myself a new titanium frame and in its honour I thought I'd post some busted titanium. Handlebars was all I could find. Thanks to Erich for the photo.

First Ride

There isn't much worse than having your bike destroyed on it's very first ride. That recently happened to Alex. Hit by an SUV riding home from the bike shop with his brand new bike. Ouch. Apparently this frame was repaired and resold.

Handlebar vs Chainstay

Here's a bizarre story from Ryan:
Here's a photo of the left chainstay of my Specialized Tarmac. This happened when I was racing the Ski & Bike Kare Criterium which was the last stage of the Steamboat Stage Race. On the second to last lap I had what I think was the handlebar of a crashing rider smash right into my left chainstay. It all happened behind me so I'm still not sure what happened exactly. I managed to not go down during it all but my race was over since my rear tire exploded when it all happened.
Who knew that was even possible.
